Free AI Instagram Engagement Calculator Tool
Find out the engagement rate of any Instagram influencer
Analyze any Instagram account: detect bots or fake followers to determine the audience quality, using our AI-powered free tool.
An Instagram fake follower checker looks through an account's audience for signs of bots and inactive profiles. UpGrow's free AI Instagram Fake Follower Checker takes a username, without the @, reads the account's public numbers and recent posts, and estimates whether it shows few, some or many signs of fake followers, listing the reason behind each signal. It works best on public accounts; a private account leaves very little for any checker to analyze.
Decide which account you are auditing: your own, a creator you might hire, or a competitor you want to understand.
Copy the username exactly as it appears, leaving out the @. Look-alike accounts often differ by a single period or underscore, so check you have the right one.
Confirm the account is public. A private profile reveals almost nothing to visitors who don't follow it.
Type the username into the Instagram Username field and press Check Account.
Back up what you see with your own look at the follower list, using the warning signs below.
The checker reads the account's follower, following and post counts plus its 12 most recent posts, and scores four signals. Each one is marked fine, worth watching or a warning, with the numbers behind it, so you can see exactly why the account landed where it did.
One warning, or two signals worth watching, puts an account in the middle band, "some signs". Two warnings, or a heavier mix, gives "many signs". An account with more than 10 million followers is compared with the largest tier for context only and is not marked down on engagement or likes per comment, because both shift as accounts grow. A private account, or one whose likes are hidden, gets no verdict at all, because there is too little to judge.
Engagement rate: average likes plus comments per post, divided by followers, against the median for the account's size in the table below. Under half the median is worth watching; under a fifth is a warning, because dead followers add to the count but never like or comment.
Following vs followers: an account with more than 1,000 followers that follows more people than follow it back is worth watching, and one that follows more than twice as many is a warning sign of follow-for-follow growth.
Posting cadence: 10,000 or more followers with fewer than 10 posts is a warning, since earned audiences grow from posts. No post for six months is worth watching, because followers of quiet accounts drift away.
Likes per comment: compared with the ratio in the same medians. Far more likes per comment than usual can follow bought likes; almost as many comments as likes can come from comment pods or bot comments.
| Tier | Followers | Median engagement rate | Median likes per post | Median comments per post |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nano | 1K–10K | 1.78% | 41 | 3 |
| Micro | 10K–50K | 0.54% | 91 | 5 |
| Mid-tier | 50K–500K | 0.43% | 353 | 10 |
| Macro | 500K–1M | 0.35% | 2,159 | 38 |
| Mega | over 1M | 0.33% | 6,678 | 88 |
No single sign proves a follower is fake. Plenty of real people never post or skip the profile photo. What counts is how many of these signs pile up on one account, and how many of your followers share them.
No profile photo, or a generic stock image.
No posts at all, or a handful of unrelated posts uploaded on the same day.
Following thousands of accounts while having very few followers of its own.
A username that looks generated, such as a common first name followed by a long string of digits, or random letters.
An empty bio, or a bio pushing a link that has nothing to do with the account.
Comments that would fit under any post, like a lone emoji or a two-word compliment, repeated across many accounts.
Sudden jumps in follower count with no matching rise in likes, comments or saves.
Engagement rate is usually worked out by dividing likes and comments by follower count. Bots and abandoned accounts add to the follower count without ever adding a like or a comment. An account whose real audience is lively can still look weak on paper, because a block of dead followers inflates the number everything is measured against.
The damage goes beyond one figure. Instagram's ranking leans on how people respond to a post, so followers who never respond add nothing to that signal. Brands vetting a creator look at the same ratio, and a large following with thin engagement is one of the first things that makes them hesitate before a collaboration.
Bought followers also blur your own decisions. If a batch of them arrived during the weeks you tried a new posting style, your growth figures will make that style look better than it was. A cleaner follower list gives you numbers you can trust when you decide what to post next.
Open your profile and tap your follower count to see the full list.
Scroll for accounts that match several warning signs at once rather than just one.
Tap Remove next to an account to take it off your followers. Instagram doesn't notify the person you removed.
Work in batches over several days if the list is long, instead of removing hundreds in one sitting.
If bots keep arriving, switch to a private account for a while so that new followers need your approval.
Cancel any service that delivers bot followers; whatever you remove would simply be topped up again.
Fake followers tend to arrive from a few familiar places: cheap follower packages built on bot accounts, follow-for-follow and giveaway loops that attract people with no interest in your content, and spam bots that follow profiles at random to make themselves look active. Instagram removes accounts it identifies as fake, so bought bot followers often disappear in waves and take the inflated count with them.
If you want your follower count to grow without the clean-up later, put the effort into people who can actually engage. UpGrow's Instagram growth service targets real accounts by location, age, gender, language and interests, so the followers who arrive match the audience you are building for.
A follower count is the easiest number to inflate, so brands that hire creators look past it. Running the creator's username through the checker is a first pass; reading their recent posts and comments yourself is the second.
It is also fair to ask the creator for screenshots of their own insights, such as where their audience lives and how many accounts a typical post reaches. Creators with a genuine audience share these routinely, and reluctance to show them is worth noting.
Compare likes and comments across the last several posts. Real audiences react differently from post to post; near-identical numbers every time can point to bought engagement.
Read the comments. Real followers mention details from the post, ask questions and reply to each other, while bots leave praise that would fit anywhere.
Check that the languages and places mentioned in the comments match the market you are selling to.
Look at who is commenting. If many commenters show the warning signs above, the engagement may be as hollow as the followers.
