An Instagram engagement rate calculator measures how much interaction an account's posts get relative to its audience. UpGrow's free Instagram Engagement Calculator takes the recent public posts Instagram returns for a username, adds up their likes and comments, averages them per post, divides by followers and shows the result as a percentage with two decimals.
Type a public account's handle, whether it's your own profile or a creator you are vetting, into the username box.
Press Calculate Engagement. UpGrow loads the profile together with the recent posts Instagram makes publicly available for it.
Wait a moment while the likes and comments on those posts are totaled and set against the follower count.
Read the percentage, then compare it with the tier tables further down this page.
The calculator uses a follower-based formula: total likes plus total comments on the fetched posts, divided by the number of those posts, divided by the follower count, multiplied by 100. The result is rounded to two decimal places.
Dividing by followers answers a simple question: of everyone who chose to follow this account, how many typically react to a post? That is the version of engagement rate brands most often ask creators for, and the only one anyone can calculate without being logged in as the account owner.
Worked example, using made-up round numbers: an account with 20,000 followers whose recent posts average 380 likes and 20 comments earns 400 interactions per post. 400 divided by 20,000 is 0.02, and multiplied by 100 that gives an engagement rate of 2.00%.
Saves, shares, reach and views are missing on purpose. Instagram reveals those figures to the profile's owner alone, so no outside calculator can read them for someone else's profile. Likes and comments are the interactions anyone can see, which is why this rate can be run on any public account and compared fairly across creators.
Private accounts: their posts are hidden from non-followers, so there are no likes or comments to count.
Accounts with no public posts: with nothing to average, the formula has no numerator.
Misspelled or deleted handles: the profile itself can't be loaded.
Only recent posts count. An older post that went viral months ago is outside the window and doesn't lift today's rate.
One unusual post inside the window, such as a giveaway packed with comments, can push the average up for as long as it stays among the recent posts.
HypeAuditor's State of Influencer Marketing 2026 report lists median Instagram engagement by influencer tier. It reports likes and comments per post alongside each tier's engagement rate, the same two interactions this calculator counts, which makes it the closer yardstick for your result.
| Tier | Followers | Median engagement rate | Median likes per post | Median comments per post |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nano | 1K–10K | 1.78% | 41 | 3 |
| Micro | 10K–50K | 0.54% | 91 | 5 |
| Mid-tier | 50K–500K | 0.43% | 353 | 10 |
| Macro | 500K–1M | 0.35% | 2,159 | 38 |

Buffer's study “What Is A Good Instagram Engagement Rate? Data from 27 Million+ Instagram Posts”, published September 2, 2025, covers more than 27 million posts from 273,000 accounts. Buffer divides a post's interactions by its impressions rather than by followers, so its rates run higher and can't be compared directly with the percentage this calculator gives you. Its overall median across all accounts is 4.3%.
| Followers | Engagement rate |
|---|---|
| 0–1K | 5.2% |
| 1K–5K | 4.6% |
| 5K–10K | 4.1% |
| 10K–50K | 3.7% |
| 50K–100K | 3.6% |
| 100K–500K | 3.5% |
| 500K–1M | 3.7% |
| 1M+ | 5.0% |
Because the rate depends on how many people interact with each post, small habits that invite a response tend to move it. None of these require a bigger audience; they make the audience you already have more likely to react.
End captions with a specific question people can answer in a few words, rather than a general “thoughts?”.
Reply to comments in the first hour after posting, which keeps conversations going and shows followers their comments get read.
Post when your followers are most active. Professional accounts can see those hours in Instagram's own insights.
Use carousels for tips, steps or before-and-after content, formats people like to swipe through and save.
Cut posts that consistently underperform from your plan, and make more of the kind that drew the most comments last month.
Find your tier in the HypeAuditor table first. Both it and UpGrow count likes plus comments per follower, so that row is the fair comparison.
Expect the rate to fall as an account grows. In HypeAuditor's medians, nano accounts sit at 1.78% while mega accounts sit at 0.33%, even though bigger accounts collect far more likes per post.
Read Buffer's table for direction, not as a target, because a per-impression rate usually looks higher than a per-follower one, since most posts are shown to fewer people than the account has followers.
Allow for niche and format. Some topics draw far more comments than others, and an account that mostly posts Reels or carousels may land differently from one that posts single photos.
Track your own rate over time. Running the calculator every few weeks and comparing with your own previous result tells you more than any single benchmark.
A single percentage hides a lot. Before you judge an account on its number, look for the patterns that commonly push the rate away from what a typical post really earns.
Giveaway and contest posts collect comments from people entering, not from fans, and lift the average for weeks.
One post that went viral can carry the whole average; compare the rate with and without it.
A sudden wave of new followers lowers the rate even when each post performs the same, because the denominator grew first.
Comment pods and bot comments add volume without real interest; read the comments on a few posts to see whether they are specific or generic.
Checking minutes after a post goes live undercounts it, since likes and comments keep arriving for a day or more.
